PROJECT 1: Bus Real Time Passenger Information and Smart Ticketing  Programme

Project Description and Scope

West Midlands Strategic Real Time Information Programme was set up with the goal of making real time passenger information accessible to public transport users through the west midlands region via electronic displays at bus stop, mobile apps, SMS service and via websites. To this end, a range of projects was commissioned to ensure that this objective is met. These include:

  • Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) project to implement 3G enabled GPS tracking equipment on about 2500 buses required to generate real time tracking data
  • Design and development of real time prediction engine (back office servers) for processing real time location tracking data and generating journey time predictions
  • Procurement and installation of over 1500 electronic screens at bus stations and bust stops across the West midlands powered by a dedicated Customer information System solution.
  • Establishment of a fleet management centre for managing bus operations in real time
  • Development of real time information solutions including journey planners accessible via mobile apps, SMS and website by passengers
  • Implementation of Smart Ticketing solution with remote fulfilment services accessible on buses and at selected locations across the region.

PROJECT 2:  Bus Traffic Light Priority Scheme

Project Description and Scope

In order to increase the attractiveness and ridership of buses as a congestion mitigation measure, the bus traffic light priority scheme was implemented in Coventry. The idea behind the scheme is to ensure that buses are more likely to get the green light at Traffic Light Controlled junctions such that journey time is improved. The scheme was rolled out to over two hundred buses and 72 junctions across Coventry. The scheme also include about 5.2Km of dedicated bus lanes with gates to help buses jump the queue ahead of other traffic.
